When should I start doing past papers?

Start with questions on topics you've already learned; you don't need to finish all your revision first. Move to full papers as you cover more of the course, and keep some unseen papers for timed practice before the exam.

How many past papers should I do before an exam?

There is no fixed number that suits everyone. Plan time to mark each paper, understand your mistakes and practise those topics again. Check your progress on unfamiliar questions rather than counting completed papers.

Should I do past papers with my notes open?

Open-book practice can help while you're learning a topic. Try answering first, then use your notes to work through gaps. For a realistic check of recall and timing, practise without notes and follow the paper's instructions about permitted materials.

Should I do a whole past paper or questions by topic?

Use topic questions to practise something you've just learned or repair a specific weakness. Use whole papers to practise switching between topics, choosing methods and managing time. Both can have a place in your revision.

How do I mark a past paper properly?

Use the official mark scheme for that exact paper and session. Check the instructions as well as the final answers, and note where your response meets the marking points or criteria. Ask your teacher about ambiguous answers, particularly extended writing.

What should I do after marking a past paper?

Record what went wrong: missing knowledge, a misunderstood question, an incorrect method or running out of time. Revise the relevant topic, then retry the question without looking at the solution. Later, try a different question to check that you can apply what you learned.

Why aren't my past-paper marks improving?

Look for mistakes that recur across papers. More full papers may not resolve a gap you haven't worked on directly. Focus a revision session on one recurring problem, get help with anything you don't understand, and check progress with unfamiliar questions.
