Choose a paper that matches your specification and the topics you want to assess. If you're working on a particular weakness, start with suitable questions rather than a full paper. Keep some unfamiliar papers for timed practice later.

Use the matching official mark scheme, checking the specification, year, session and paper number. For questions that accept a range of responses, read the marking criteria as well as any example answer.

They can provide extra practice on overlapping topics, but content, terminology and assessment requirements can differ. Prioritise your own specification and ask your teacher to check unfamiliar material from another board.

Some questions may still be relevant, but topics, methods and assessment requirements can change. Check each question against your current specification and use current-specification papers to practise the exam's overall structure.

Check whether the question requires working, a particular method or a specified level of accuracy. Compare your full solution with the mark scheme. Make each step clear so that the reasoning can be followed.

First write down what you know and try a method. If you're still stuck, use the solution to identify the missing step, then close it and complete the question yourself. Try a similar question later to check your understanding.

Record what went wrong: missing knowledge, a misunderstood question, an incorrect method or running out of time. Revise the relevant topic, then retry the question without looking at the solution. Later, try a different question to check that you can apply what you learned.
