How do sixth form and college differ?

School sixth forms often focus on A levels within a familiar environment, while sixth-form and FE colleges may offer broader academic, technical and vocational programmes. The label matters less than the actual course, teaching, support and progression route.

What about T Levels and apprenticeships?

T Levels combine classroom study with an industry placement in a defined occupational area. Apprenticeships combine paid work with training and assessment. Check the current entry requirements, employer or provider, travel, pay, qualification and realistic next steps.

How should you decide?

Start with what you want to learn and the type of work you can sustain, then test practical constraints. Ask where recent students progressed, what happens if a subject is dropped, what support is available and whether the route keeps open the next options you care about.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to stay in education after GCSEs?

In England, young people must remain in education or training until 18, but this can include full-time education, an apprenticeship or part-time education alongside sufficient work or volunteering.

Can I do an apprenticeship after GCSEs?

Yes, where you meet the apprenticeship and employer requirements. Vacancies are competitive, so compare the job, training provider, qualification and progression rather than only the title.

Can I change college after results day?

Potentially, subject to places and entry requirements. Contact the new provider before giving up a confirmed place.

Where can I get impartial results advice?

The National Careers Service provides exam-results and post-16 guidance in England, including phone and webchat support.
