How to Read Your GCSE Results Slip: Grades, Marks & Codes

Understand the subjects, grades, marks, combined-science pairs and pending codes on a GCSE results slip, plus what to check before leaving school.

Read your slip row by row: confirm the qualification and subject, note the final grade, then look for a mark, tier or code if shown. Results-slip layouts vary, so ask the exams officer to explain anything unclear before comparing the mark with an exam-board boundary table.

What information should be on the slip?

A slip normally identifies the qualification or subject and the awarded result. It may also show an exam board, specification or entry code, tier and total mark. Not every centre prints the same fields, and the displayed mark is not always a simple sum you can compare with any table you find online. Check that your name and every expected qualification are present. Photograph or securely download the slip, but remember that it is provisional results information rather than the final certificate.

How do number grades and combined science work?

Most GCSEs in England use grades 9 to 1, with 9 highest. Combined science is a double award, so it produces two equal or adjacent grades such as 8-7, 6-6 or 4-3 and counts as two GCSEs. Grade 4 is commonly called a standard pass and grade 5 a strong pass, but a course may require a specific grade in maths, English or a chosen subject. Read the actual entry conditions rather than relying on the word pass.

What if a result is missing or coded?

A U is a final unclassified result. Codes such as Q or X may mean no result is being issued or the result is pending. Do not guess from social posts: speak to the school's exams officer, who can see the centre's exam-board information and investigate.

Frequently asked questions

What does U mean on GCSE results?

U means unclassified: the mark did not reach the minimum needed for grade 1. Ask your school or college what that means for your next course and whether a resit is appropriate.

What do Q and X mean on a GCSE results slip?

Q and X can indicate that a result has not been issued or is pending rather than a final grade. Speak to your school's exams officer immediately because only the centre and exam board can explain the code in your case.

Why are there two grades for combined science?

Combined science is worth two GCSEs, so it is reported as a pair such as 7-6 or 5-5. The two grades must be equal or adjacent and together represent the whole qualification.

Is the mark on my results slip my raw mark?

It may be, but layouts and qualification systems vary. Ask the exams officer what the figure represents before comparing it with a raw-mark boundary table.

Is my GCSE results slip the final certificate?

No. It records provisional results. Your school or college will explain when and how official certificates are issued or collected.
