Should I Request a GCSE Review of Marking? Decision Guide

One mark from the next grade? Use component marks, scripts, risk, cost and the real consequence of a higher grade to decide on a review.

Discuss a review when the script or component evidence suggests the marking rules may not have been applied correctly and the possible grade change matters. Being close to a boundary is useful context, but it is not proof of an error. The mark can decrease, stay the same or increase.

What evidence should you collect first?

Get the total and component marks, confirm the correct 2026 boundary, and ask whether the script can be accessed. A subject teacher can compare the work with the mark scheme and identify any answer where the awarded mark looks inconsistent. Also check for an administrative issue such as a missing component. The right service depends on the suspected problem.

What makes the decision worthwhile?

Consider the number of marks needed, the teacher's evidence, the possibility of losing marks, the fee and the deadline. Most importantly, ask whether the higher grade changes a course place, a required English or maths result, or another concrete outcome.

What should not drive the decision?

A prediction, disappointment or being one mark short does not automatically mean the marking was wrong. Reviews protect accurate application of the mark scheme; they are not discretionary grade boosts.

Frequently asked questions

Can a GCSE mark go down after a review of marking?

Yes. A reviewed mark can go down, stay the same or go up, and the overall grade can change with it. Your school or college should explain the risk and obtain your consent before applying.

Can I ask the exam board for a remark myself?

Most students apply through their school or college, which can first request the script and advise on the correct service. Private candidates may be able to contact the exam board or their exam centre directly.

Is a review of marking the same as a complete remark?

It checks whether the mark scheme and marking rules were applied correctly. It is not a request for a more generous examiner, and a mark changes only where an error is found.

Is one mark off the next grade worth a review?

It can be worth discussing because a small mark change could alter the grade, but only the script and component evidence can show whether an error is plausible.

Can I review only one GCSE paper?

A centre can request a review for a component, but the overall grade changes only if the corrected total crosses a qualification boundary. Ask which paper offers evidence of a marking issue.
