Start with your school, check the script, request the right review and understand when a formal GCSE appeal is possible in England.
Start by speaking to your school or college. It can request your marked script, check for an administrative issue and submit a review of marking with your consent. If concerns remain after that review, the centre can use the exam board's appeal process. A grade can go down, stay the same or go up.
First ask the exams officer or relevant teacher for the component marks and the centre's post-results policy. Access to the script can help the school decide whether a clerical re-check, review of marking or no request is justified. Most students do not apply directly to the board. The school submits the service, obtains consent and receives the outcome. It must also allow students to appeal internally if it decides not to request a review.
What can change after a review?
If no marking error is found, the mark stays the same. If an error is found, the mark is corrected and can decrease or increase, which may or may not change the subject grade. Exam boards cannot add marks simply because a student is close to a boundary or missed a predicted grade.
When does a formal appeal happen?
An appeal comes after the relevant review where the centre still believes the exam board did not follow its procedures correctly. Ofqual's EPRS is a later process that checks procedure after the exam board's final appeal stage; it does not re-mark the work itself.

Revise Right is not an exam board. Check your school, college, awarding organisation or regulator before acting on a grade, review, appeal or resit deadline.
Can a GCSE mark go down after a review of marking?
Yes. A reviewed mark can go down, stay the same or go up, and the overall grade can change with it. Your school or college should explain the risk and obtain your consent before applying.
Can I ask the exam board for a remark myself?
Most students apply through their school or college, which can first request the script and advise on the correct service. Private candidates may be able to contact the exam board or their exam centre directly.
Is a review of marking the same as a complete remark?
It checks whether the mark scheme and marking rules were applied correctly. It is not a request for a more generous examiner, and a mark changes only where an error is found.
How much does a GCSE review cost?
Fees vary by exam board and service. Ofqual says a fee may be charged if the grade does not change, while there is no fee if the qualification grade changes. Ask your centre for the exact terms.
How long does a GCSE appeal take?
Timings depend on the service and exam board. Ask the centre for the published 2026 deadline and expected completion time, especially if a sixth-form place depends on the outcome.
