When can GCSEs be retaken?

Ofqual's 2026 student guide says English language and maths exams are available in November for eligible students aged 16 or over by 31 August. Because most other GCSE exams run in May and June, those subjects generally require waiting until the next summer series. Your centre needs time to enter you, so ask early. Availability, teaching and fees can differ between a school, college and private exam centre.

Do you retake the whole GCSE?

Students resitting GCSEs normally retake all exam components. Non-exam assessment may sometimes be retaken or carried forward, depending on the qualification rules and centre advice. Do not assume one weak paper can simply be sat again on its own.

Should you resit?

Resit when the improved grade unlocks a meaningful next step and you can change how you prepare. Compare it with starting another course now. If you resit, use component evidence to target the topics and exam habits that cost marks.
