1. Why Some Couples Need Help Having Children
Around 1 in 7 couples struggle to conceive naturally. Sometimes the problem is blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count, or hormonal imbalances that prevent normal ovulation.
When natural conception fails, doctors can use a technique called In Vitro Fertilisation - literally meaning 'fertilisation in glass'. Instead of fertilisation happening inside the woman's body, it happens in a laboratory dish.
A fertility treatment where eggs are fertilised by sperm outside the body in laboratory conditions, then implanted into the uterus.
Trap: Many students think IVF means 'test tube babies' - but no test tubes are used. The fertilisation happens in shallow laboratory dishes called petri dishes.
2. Step 1: Hormone Treatment to Produce Multiple Eggs
Normally, a woman releases just one egg per month during ovulation. For IVF to work, doctors need multiple eggs to increase the chances of success.
The woman is given hormone injections containing FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinising Hormone). These are the same hormones her body produces naturally, but in much higher concentrations.
A hormone that stimulates the maturation of multiple eggs in the ovaries during IVF treatment.
FSH causes several follicles in the ovaries to mature simultaneously, instead of the usual one. LH then triggers the final maturation of these eggs, preparing them for collection.
