  • Your nervous system processes information faster than you can blink. But how fast exactly? Scientists measure reaction times to understand how our brains work - and you need to analyse their data.
  • In exams, you'll face tables of reaction time measurements, graphs showing how factors affect responses, and charts comparing different conditions. The trick isn't just reading the numbers - it's spotting the patterns and explaining what they mean.
  • 2. Reading Nervous System Data Like a Detective
  • The time taken between a stimulus being detected and a response being made. Measured in seconds or milliseconds.
  • When you see a table of reaction times, your first job is to spot the pattern. Look for the highest and lowest values, then ask yourself: what's different about those conditions?
  • Trap: Many students think faster reaction times mean bigger numbers. Actually, a shorter time (smaller number) means a faster reaction. 0.2 seconds is faster than 0.5 seconds.
  • Scientists never rely on single measurements - they take repeats and calculate the mean. This reduces the effect of anomalous results and gives a more reliable value.
  • Notice how the mean (0.27s) sits roughly in the middle of our range. If your calculated mean is way outside the range of your data, you've made an error.
  • Graphs show relationships between variables. In nervous system studies, you might see how reaction time changes with age, caffeine intake, or practice. The key is describing what you see, then explaining why it happens.
  • When describing a graph, use precise language: 'increases', 'decreases', 'remains constant', 'peaks at'. Avoid vague terms like 'goes up' or 'changes'.
