Imagine two teenagers - one wants to prevent pregnancy but struggles to remember daily medication, another has heavy periods and wants hormonal help. The same contraceptive method won't work for both. Understanding how different methods work helps people make informed choices about their reproductive health.
Contraceptive methods fall into two main categories: hormonal (using synthetic hormones) and non-hormonal (physical or chemical barriers). Each has different effectiveness rates, side effects, and suitability for different lifestyles.
Contains synthetic oestrogen and progesterone that prevent ovulation by inhibiting FSH and LH release from the pituitary gland
The combined pill works by tricking your body into thinking it's already pregnant. The synthetic hormones stop the pituitary gland releasing FSH and LH, so no eggs mature or get released. It's over 99% effective when taken correctly - but here's the catch: 'correctly' means same time every day, no missed pills.
Advantages: Highly effective, can reduce period pain and acne, reversible. Disadvantages: Must remember daily, side effects like nausea and mood changes, small increased risk of blood clots, doesn't protect against STIs.
Contains only synthetic progesterone that thickens cervical mucus and sometimes prevents ovulation
The 'mini-pill' works differently - it thickens the mucus at the cervix entrance, making it nearly impossible for sperm to swim through. Some types also stop ovulation. It's suitable for women who can't take oestrogen due to health risks like blood clots.
Advantages: Safe for most women, can be used while breastfeeding. Disadvantages: Must be taken within 3 hours of the same time daily, irregular bleeding common, slightly less effective than combined pill.
Other hormonal methods include contraceptive injections (last 3 months), implants (last 3 years), and patches (changed weekly). These remove the daily memory requirement but have their own trade-offs in terms of side effects and reversibility.
