Every meal you eat connects you to the Sun. That energy in your sandwich? It started 93 million miles away and was captured by a green plant. Without producers, there would be no life on Earth.
An organism that synthesises molecules using energy from the environment, usually through photosynthesis. Producers convert light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose.
Producers are the energy converters of our planet. Green plants and algae use photosynthesis to turn carbon dioxide and water into glucose using sunlight. This glucose becomes the biomass that feeds everything else.
Trap: Many students think animals can be producers. Only organisms that make their own food through photosynthesis (or chemosynthesis in extreme environments) count as producers.
Food chains show who eats whom in an ecosystem. Think of them as energy highways - energy flows from producers to consumers in one direction only.

Every food chain follows the same pattern: Producer → Primary Consumer → Secondary Consumer → Tertiary Consumer. The arrows show energy transfer, not 'who eats who'.
Consumers are ranked by how many steps they are from the producer. Each level has a specific name that tells you exactly where they fit in the energy flow.
The first consumer in a food chain - organisms that eat producers directly. Always herbivores in terrestrial ecosystems.
Organisms that eat primary consumers. Usually carnivores, but can be omnivores that eat both plants and animals.
