Imagine you're studying bird populations in a woodland. You count 12 robins on Monday, 8 on Tuesday, 15 on Wednesday, 3 on Thursday, and 14 on Friday. What's the 'typical' number of robins? Without proper statistical tools, you're just guessing.
Ecologists collect masses of data - population counts, species diversity, environmental measurements. Raw numbers tell us nothing until we analyse them properly. That's where mean, mode, and median become your best friends.
These statistical measures help us spot patterns, compare different habitats, and make predictions about ecosystem health. More importantly for your exams, they're essential tools for Required Practicals and data analysis questions.
The sum of all values divided by the number of values. Formula: Mean = Σx ÷ n, where Σx is the sum of all values and n is the number of values.
Trap: Many students think you can just estimate the mean by looking. Always calculate it properly - examiners check your working.
The value that appears most frequently in a data set. A data set can have no mode, one mode, or multiple modes.
Trap: The mode is the actual value that repeats most, not how many times it repeats. If 5 appears three times, the mode is 5, not 3.
The middle value when all values are arranged in ascending order. For even numbers of values, it's the mean of the two middle values.
Trap: You must arrange the data in order first. Finding the median from unsorted data is a common mistake that loses marks.
Each measure tells us something different about our ecological data. The mean gives us the average, but extreme values can skew it. The median is more robust against outliers. The mode shows us the most common observation.
