1. Why Do Polar Bears Have White Fur?
A polar bear's white fur isn't just for looks - it's a matter of life and death. In the Arctic, being spotted by prey means starvation. Being spotted by predators means becoming dinner. That white coat is an adaptation - a feature that helps the bear survive in its harsh environment.
Every organism on Earth has adaptations. From the cactus in the desert to the fish in the deep ocean, each has evolved features that help it survive where it lives. Understanding these adaptations is key to understanding how life works.
Physical features of an organism that help it survive in its environment. These include body shape, size, colour, and specialised organs.
Think of structural adaptations as the 'hardware' of survival. A penguin's streamlined body cuts through water like a torpedo. A giraffe's long neck reaches leaves other animals can't touch. A cactus's thick, waxy skin prevents water loss in the desert.
Actions or behaviours that help an organism survive. These are learned or instinctive responses to environmental challenges.
Behavioural adaptations are the 'software' of survival. Birds migrate thousands of miles to find food and warmth. Meerkats take turns standing guard while others feed. Nocturnal animals hunt at night to avoid daytime predators and heat.
Internal processes that help an organism survive. These include how the body produces energy, removes waste, or maintains temperature.
Functional adaptations are the 'operating system' of survival. Camels can survive weeks without water by recycling it efficiently. Arctic fish produce antifreeze proteins to prevent their blood from freezing. Desert plants open their stomata at night to reduce water loss.
Here's where students often get confused - let's test your understanding:
