  • Imagine walking into a massive library where books are scattered randomly on shelves. Finding anything would be impossible. Scientists faced the same problem with living things - millions of different species with no organised system.
  • Before Carl Linnaeus came along in the 1700s, people used common names for organisms. The problem? A single animal might have dozens of different names in different languages and regions. What one person called a 'mountain lion' another called a 'cougar' or 'puma' - all the same species!
  • Linnaeus solved this chaos by creating a universal system. Every scientist worldwide now uses the same classification system and naming rules. This means a biologist in Japan and another in Brazil can discuss the same organism without confusion.
  • 2. The Linnaean Hierarchy - Seven Levels of Organisation
  • Linnaeus organised living things into seven main levels, like Russian dolls fitting inside each other. Each level gets more specific as you go down. Here's the hierarchy from largest to smallest group:
  • The largest group in classification, containing organisms with fundamental similarities. Examples include Animal Kingdom and Plant Kingdom.
  • A major group within a kingdom, containing organisms with similar body plans. Example: Chordata (animals with backbones).
  • A group within a phylum, containing organisms with similar characteristics. Example: Mammalia (animals that produce milk).
  • A group within a class, containing organisms with similar lifestyles or structures. Example: Carnivora (meat-eating mammals).
  • A group within an order, containing closely related organisms. Example: Felidae (cat family).
