  • Your DNA is like a recipe book with 3 billion letters. Every time a cell divides, it has to copy this entire recipe perfectly. But copying isn't perfect - mistakes happen. These mistakes are called mutations, and they're happening in your body right now.
  • A random change in the DNA sequence that occurs continuously in all living organisms. These changes can affect single bases or larger sections of DNA.
  • Think of mutations like typos in a recipe. Most typos don't change the dish - 'add 2 cups of flour' still makes sense even with a spelling mistake. But occasionally, a typo completely changes the meaning.
  • Here's the crucial point that trips up many students: not all mutations do something visible. In fact, most mutations are completely silent. Let's break this down into three categories.
  • Most mutations have no effect on phenotype. This is like changing DNA codon CAA to CAG: both code for glutamine, so the protein and phenotype stay the same.
  • Some mutations influence phenotype. These cause small, gradual changes - like slightly different eye colour or height. The organism still functions normally, but there are measurable differences.
  • Very few mutations determine phenotype. These create completely new characteristics - like the ability to digest lactose in adult humans, or antibiotic resistance in bacteria. These are the game-changers.
  • Most of the time, mutations that create new phenotypes are neutral or even harmful. But here's where evolution gets interesting - when the environment changes, a previously useless mutation might suddenly become life-saving.
  • This is why we see 'superbugs' in hospitals and why some insects become pesticide-resistant so quickly. The mutations were always there - the environmental change just made them valuable.
