Right now, as you read this, billions of reactions are happening inside your cells. Your heart beats, your muscles contract, your brain processes information. All of this needs energy - but where does it come from?
The answer lies in a process called cellular respiration. It's happening in every living cell in your body, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Without it, you'd be dead in seconds.
An exothermic reaction that occurs continuously in living cells to transfer energy from glucose for life processes
Think of cellular respiration as your body's power station. Just like a power station burns fuel to generate electricity, your cells 'burn' glucose to generate energy. The key difference? Your cells are incredibly efficient and the process is carefully controlled.
**Trap**: Many students think respiration only happens when you breathe. Actually, breathing (ventilation) just gets oxygen to your cells. Cellular respiration is the chemical reaction inside the cells that releases energy.
Energy from respiration powers three main categories of life processes. Understanding these helps explain why respiration never stops.
Chemical Reactions to Build Larger Molecules: Your cells constantly build proteins from amino acids, DNA from nucleotides, and complex carbohydrates from simple sugars. These synthesis reactions need energy input - like building a wall needs energy to lift each brick into place.
Movement: Every muscle contraction needs energy. This includes obvious movements like walking, but also involuntary movements like your heartbeat, breathing muscles, and even the movement of substances across cell membranes.
Keeping Warm: Mammals and birds maintain constant body temperature. When it's cold outside, your cells increase respiration rate to generate more heat energy. This is why you shiver - rapid muscle contractions increase respiration and heat production.
Cells can release energy from glucose in two different ways, depending on whether oxygen is available. This flexibility is crucial for survival.
