Understanding photosynthesis rates isn't just academic curiosity. Farmers need to know which conditions give the best crop yields. Greenhouse owners adjust temperature and CO₂ levels to maximise plant growth. Even space missions depend on knowing how efficiently plants can produce oxygen for astronauts.
The key insight? Photosynthesis rate changes dramatically with conditions. Change the light, temperature, or CO₂ concentration, and you change how fast plants make food and oxygen. Let's learn to measure and predict these changes.
The speed at which photosynthesis occurs, measured as the volume of oxygen produced or carbon dioxide used per unit time. Typical units: cm³/min or bubbles per minute.
Trap: Many students think rate means 'total amount'. Actually, rate is amount per unit time. A plant producing 10 cm³ of oxygen in 5 minutes has a rate of 2 cm³/min, not 10 cm³.
The factor that restricts the rate of photosynthesis when it is in short supply. Only one factor can be limiting at any given time - the one that's most scarce.
Think of it like a factory production line. If you have 10 workers but only 3 machines, the machines limit production. Adding more workers won't help - you need more machines. In photosynthesis, light, CO₂, temperature, or chlorophyll can be the 'bottleneck'.
You can't see photosynthesis happening, but you can measure its products. The most common method uses aquatic plants like Elodea (Canadian pondweed) because they release oxygen bubbles you can count or collect.
