Imagine your body as a fortress under siege. The first time an enemy attacks, your guards scramble to defend - some succeed, others don't. But what if your guards could remember every enemy they'd ever faced? That's exactly what vaccination does for your immune system.
Vaccination is one of medicine's greatest success stories. It's eliminated smallpox globally and nearly wiped out polio. But how does injecting a tiny amount of weakened pathogen protect you - and everyone around you?
A preparation containing antigens from pathogens that stimulates immunity without causing disease. Contains dead, weakened, or parts of disease-causing organisms.
When you receive a vaccine, your body encounters antigens - the molecular 'fingerprints' of pathogens. Your immune system springs into action, producing antibodies and activating white blood cells to fight these perceived invaders.
Here's the clever part: some of these white blood cells become memory cells. They patrol your bloodstream for years, sometimes decades, remembering exactly what that pathogen looks like. If the real disease tries to infect you later, these memory cells recognise it instantly.
This secondary immune response is lightning-fast compared to the first encounter. Instead of taking weeks to build immunity, memory cells can flood your system with antibodies within hours or days - often before you even feel unwell.
Individual protection is just the beginning. When enough people in a community are vaccinated, something remarkable happens - the entire population becomes protected, even those who can't be vaccinated.
Protection of a population when a high percentage are immune to a disease, making transmission unlikely and protecting vulnerable individuals who cannot be vaccinated.
Think of disease transmission like a forest fire. The fire spreads from tree to tree, but if you remove enough trees (vaccinate enough people), the fire can't jump the gaps. It burns out naturally.
For measles, about 95% of the population needs immunity to achieve herd immunity. For polio, it's around 80%. These thresholds depend on how contagious the disease is - more contagious diseases need higher vaccination rates.
