1. Why Your Body Needs a Training Programme
Imagine facing a dangerous enemy with no preparation versus having trained for months. Your immune system faces the same challenge when pathogens invade your body.
Without vaccination, your first encounter with a pathogen like measles or polio could be devastating. Your white blood cells have never seen this enemy before, so they're slow to respond. By the time they figure out how to fight back, the pathogen has already caused serious damage.
Vaccination gives your immune system advance warning. It's like showing your body's security team a photo of the criminal before they break in.
The introduction of small quantities of dead or inactive forms of a pathogen into the body to stimulate white blood cells to produce antibodies without causing disease.
Here's what happens when you receive a vaccine. The vaccine contains either dead pathogens or weakened (inactive) versions that cannot cause the actual disease. Think of them as 'practice dummies' for your immune system.
Your white blood cells detect these foreign antigens and spring into action. They produce specific antibodies designed to bind to and neutralise this particular pathogen. This process takes several days to weeks, but crucially, you don't get ill because the pathogens are harmless.
**Trap**: Many students think vaccines contain live, dangerous pathogens. Actually, they contain either dead pathogens or weakened versions that cannot cause disease in healthy people.
The clever part happens next. Some of your white blood cells become memory cells, staying in your bloodstream for years, sometimes decades. They remember exactly what this pathogen looks like.
