Every second, millions of pathogens try to invade your body. Yet most of the time, you stay healthy. Why? Your body has an incredible security system - physical barriers that stop pathogens before they can cause infection.
Think of your body like a castle under siege. The walls, moats, and guards work together to keep invaders out. Your physical barriers work the same way - they're your first line of defence against disease.
Structural defences that prevent pathogens from entering the body, forming the first line of immune defence. They include skin, mucous membranes, and chemical secretions.
These barriers are 'non-specific' - they protect against all types of pathogens, whether bacteria, viruses, fungi, or protists. Let's explore how each barrier keeps you safe.
Your skin is your body's largest organ and most important physical barrier. It covers your entire body surface, creating an almost impenetrable wall against pathogens.
The outer layer of skin consists of dead, flattened cells packed with a tough protein called keratin. This creates a waterproof barrier that most pathogens cannot penetrate. The cells are constantly shed and replaced, taking any surface pathogens with them.
But skin does more than just block pathogens. It produces antimicrobial substances and maintains an acidic pH (around 5.5) that kills many bacteria and fungi. Sebaceous glands secrete oils that further protect the surface.
In GCSE Biology, the nose is a key concept within physical barriers against pathogens. Use precise scientific vocabulary and link structure, process, and outcome when answering exam questions.
Every breath you take could contain pathogens. Your nose acts like a sophisticated air filtration system, cleaning the air before it reaches your lungs.
The nasal cavity is lined with mucous membrane that produces sticky mucus. This mucus traps dust, pollen, bacteria, and viruses from inhaled air. Tiny hairs called cilia beat rhythmically to move the mucus (and trapped pathogens) towards the throat, where it's swallowed.
