  • Every breath you take depends on leaves. They're the factories that turn sunlight into the oxygen we breathe and the food that powers life on Earth.
  • But here's what makes leaves fascinating - they're not just simple green sheets. They're complex organs with multiple layers of specialised tissues, each perfectly designed for a specific job. Think of a leaf like a multi-storey factory, with different departments on each floor.
  • The protective outer layer of cells covering both surfaces of the leaf. Acts as a barrier against water loss and pathogens.
  • Picture a leaf in cross-section, like slicing through a sandwich. The epidermis is the 'bread' - thin protective layers on top and bottom. The upper epidermis is often waxy to prevent water loss, while the lower epidermis contains most of the stomata.
  • Tightly packed column-shaped cells just beneath the upper epidermis. Contains the highest concentration of chloroplasts for maximum light absorption.
  • Loosely arranged cells with air spaces beneath the palisade layer. Allows gases to move freely between cells and stomata.
  • The mesophyll is where photosynthesis happens. The palisade cells are like solar panels - positioned to catch maximum sunlight. Below them, the spongy mesophyll creates a network of air spaces, like the ventilation system in a building.
  • Hollow tubes that transport water and dissolved minerals from roots to leaves. Made of dead cells with thick walls for support.
  • Living tubes that transport dissolved sugars from leaves to all parts of the plant. Transports dissolved sugars from leaves to other parts of the plant.
  • Think of xylem and phloem as the leaf's plumbing system. Xylem brings water up from the roots - like water pipes delivering fresh water to your home. Phloem carries the sugar 'products' away from the leaf factory to feed the rest of the plant.
