When someone asks if you're healthy, what comes to mind? Most people think about not having a cold or broken bones. But health is much more complex than that.
Health is the state of physical and mental wellbeing. It's not just the absence of disease - you can be disease-free but still not healthy if you're stressed, malnourished, or mentally unwell.
Think of health like a balanced scale. On one side, you have factors that promote wellbeing: good nutrition, exercise, social support, adequate sleep. On the other side, you have factors that damage health: disease, stress, poor diet, isolation.
This balance is constantly shifting. A person might be physically fit but struggling with depression. Another might have diabetes but manage it so well they feel great mentally and physically. Health isn't black and white - it's a spectrum.
Diseases fall into two main camps, and understanding the difference is crucial for your exams. The key is in the name: can it be communicated (passed on) or not?
A disease caused by pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites) that can be transmitted from one organism to another through direct contact, air, water, or vectors.
Examples: COVID-19, tuberculosis, malaria, athlete's foot. These spread because the pathogen can survive outside the host and infect new people.
A disease that cannot be transmitted between organisms. Usually caused by genetic factors, lifestyle choices, environmental factors, or age-related changes.
Examples: Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis. You can't 'catch' diabetes from someone - it develops due to genetics, diet, exercise levels, and other personal factors.
Here's where it gets interesting - and where exam questions get tricky. Diseases don't exist in isolation. Having one disease often makes you more likely to get another, or makes existing diseases worse.
