Trap: Many students think all valve problems are the same. Actually, there are two distinct types - stenosis (won't open properly) and regurgitation (won't close properly) - and they cause different symptoms.
When valves fail, your heart becomes like a leaky pump trying to fill a bucket with holes. The consequences depend on which valve is affected and how it's failing.
With stenosis, imagine trying to drink a thick milkshake through a blocked straw. Your heart muscle has to work much harder to push blood through the narrowed valve. Regurgitation creates a different problem. Blood that should be moving forward leaks backwards with each heartbeat. It's like trying to fill a bucket when someone keeps pouring water back out. When valves are too damaged to repair, surgeons can replace them. You have two main options, each with distinct advantages and drawbacks.
Biological valves come from pigs, cows, or human donors. These work naturally with your body's rhythm and don't require blood-thinning medication. However, they typically last 10-15 years before wearing out, meaning younger patients may need multiple replacements throughout their lifetime.
