1. Why Your Heart Never Takes a Break
Your heart beats around 100,000 times every day without you thinking about it. But here's the puzzle - why does blood need to go through your heart twice in every circuit around your body? The answer lies in understanding how your heart works as two pumps in one.
A muscular organ that pumps blood around the body in a double circulatory system. It has four chambers - two atria (top) and two ventricles (bottom).
Think of your heart as a house with four rooms. The two upstairs rooms (atria) receive blood coming back to the heart. The two downstairs rooms (ventricles) are the powerful pumps that push blood out to where it needs to go.
2. The Double Journey - Why Blood Goes Round Twice
Your blood makes two separate journeys every time it circulates. This is called a double circulatory system, and it's much more efficient than having blood go everywhere in one big loop.
A circulation system where blood passes through the heart twice in one complete circuit - once to collect oxygen from the lungs, and once to deliver it to the rest of the body.
Journey 1: Heart → Lungs → HeartThe right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs where gas exchange takes place. Oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide is removed. This oxygenated blood returns to the left side of the heart.
Journey 2: Heart → Body → HeartThe left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood around the rest of the body. Cells use the oxygen and produce carbon dioxide as waste. This deoxygenated blood returns to the right side of the heart.
Trap: Many students think the right side of the heart pumps oxygenated blood. Actually, it's the opposite - right pumps to lungs (deoxygenated), left pumps to body (oxygenated).
